A Personal Memoir: Fragments for an Autobiography integrates the memoirs of Antoni Tàpies, beginning in pre–civil war Barcelona and extending to Francoist Madrid, existentialist Paris, and New York in the 1950s, with historical images from diverse sources, including the family and the artist's archives. Tàpies's reflections on his interactions with such prominent cultural figures as Picasso, Miró, and Duchamp, on his approach to modernity and the avant-garde, and on the historical events of his lifetime—from his birth in 1923 to the 1970s—provide insights into the inner sources and development of his art. Highlighting the close ties between his writings and his visual work, this volume includes a generous selection of both color and black-and-white images that trace the unfolding of Tàpies's artistic language from the 1940s to the present.

A broad overview of the experimental work of the Spanish artist, from the `60s to his most recent creations. Through a rigorous selection of paintings, sculptures and installations, in which each component takes on a concrete and visionary presence, the exhibition aims to re-discover the persisting influence of the mark made by this Spanish artist, who has never abandoned his experimental search.

The continuous dialogue between matter and form finds space in the Calabrian museum. The museum will also house Muri (Walls), a synthesis of his art, of the nomadic journey which, using language that is permanently precarious and unstable, leads to the Graffitism of the `80s.

Description

The work of Antoni Tapies offers a unique case of the artist-as-shaman--that is, the artist as an alchemist who is capable of discovering the nature of materials, transforming their substance, and bringing meaning to life. A self-taught painter, Tapies began his career in the lively and exciting period directly following World War II: in 1947 he founded, along with Joan Brossa, the journal ''Dau al Set,'' which championed Surrealist aesthetics. Drawing upon the latter, Tapies created a Spanish analogue to the so-called Abstract Expressionism of the New York School, combining the techniques and forms of "action painting" with his own deep sense of human pathos. As time went by, Tapies increasingly incorporated social themes into his work, achieving a rare and impassioned mix of experimental painting and politics. This new monograph surveys the artist's career from the late 1940s to the present day, selecting works that show the diversities and unities within the artist's consistently rewarding oeuvre. What we find is an artist who has always questioned and challenged our ways of seeing art and the world, and in the process, created true masterpieces.

Description

This is the third in a series of six volumes on the important contemporary Spanish artist Antoni Tapies. The series presents his entire oeuvre, including paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculptures.

The period covered by this third volume presents work in which social and political elements appear to have been accentuated. During the second half of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, Tapies' art acquired a more specifically political character of protest. Many of his works produced in the course of these years constitute criticism of autocratic and bureaucratic power.
