Auguste Rodin

BORN: November 12, 1840 in Paris France.
DIED: November 17, 1917 in Meudon, Ile-de-France.

MOVEMENT: Sculpture.

INTERESTING FACTS:
Rodin studied at the Petite Ecole and Gobelins tapestry manufactory. He tried three times and did not pass the Ecole des Beaux-Arts entrance exam.
After his sister died, he joined a Catholic order. Father Eymard encouraged him to pursue sculpture and drawing.
Rodin had to defend himself for the Age of Bronze and St John the Baptist sculptures. His work was so realistic, critics felt he made a cast from a live model.
He had a relationship with Camille Claudel, a student, assistant, and model for many of his sculptures. Their stormy relationship ended in 1898.
Rodin stopped doing public commissions after critics disliked his Victor Hugo and Balzac sculptures.
Rodin finally married his lifelong companion Rose Beuret in 1917, the year they both died.

"I have drawn all my life. I began withdrawing: I have never stopped drawing."—Auguste Rodin

From the "black" drawings contemporaneous with the Gates of Hell to his great watercolor nudes, this book reproduces hundreds of Auguste Rodin's most beautiful graphic works held in the collection of the Musée Rodin, a number of which are published here for the first time. The accompanying essays analyze the complex relationships between Rodin's drawings and his sculptures, the problems of attribution, and the role of sensuality in his work.

Rodin's rich graphic oeuvre has until now been a little-known aspect of his art, yet it is crucial to a full understanding of his work. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the great sculptor's achievements. 372 illustrations in color and black-and-white

Description

Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was not only the world's greatest sculptor, known for such works as The Thinker, The Kiss, The Hand of God, and dozens of others, but also one of the most remarkable personalities of modern times: an artist who outraged contemporaries with his disturbingly unfinished monuments; a sensualist who shocked France with his scandalous relationships; and a friend to the most gifted writers and artists of his day. Beautifully written and illustrated, Rodin is the definitive biography of a man whose influence on sculpture was as profound as Michelangelo's.

Description

Influenced by both the masters of Antiquity, the genius of Michelangelo and Baroque sculpture, notably Bernini, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is one of the most renowned artists in history. Though Rodin is considered a founder of modern sculpture, he did not set out to critique past classical traditions. Many of his sculptures were criticised and considered controversial because of their sensuality or realistic qualities. His most original works departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory and embraced the human body, celebrated individualism and physicality.

This book uncovers the life and career of this celebrated artist by exploring his most famous works of art such as the Gates of Hell, The Thinker and the infamous The Kiss.
