A fun, fast-paced romantic comedy

Sixteen-year-old Stan Claxton is recruited to coach his best friend, Ginny, a nationally ranked junior tennis player, through a local tournament. He is also supposed to find out why she has recently fallen into a slump. As Stan and Ginny slowly figure out just how their friendship will proceed, readers will delight in a quirky assortment of characters: Guballa and Wilcutts, Stan's other best friends, who both have the hots for Ginny; a female aerobics instructor with an incredible body and a face like Humphrey Bogart's; a glamorous unranked tennis player who might be a thief; Clinkt Eastwood--maybe; and the sophisticated Lord Boxton, one of Stan's tennis heroes, who previously owned the world's most expensive racquet. And then there are the whistling toilets. But readers will have to wait until the end of the novel to find out about those.

By no means a novel for sports lovers only, Randy Powell's latest assortment of likable eccentrics will win over readers of all predilections.

Description

Chaos! Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics -- with assistance from Oni Press, Top Shelf Productions, and others present a collection of stories and illustrations from an incredibly diverse array of talented writers and artists. The New Yorker's Eric Drooker contributes a cover showing a cityscape that is simultaneously ancient and modern, mournful and hopeful, with an artist at the center, empowered to interpret a tragic landscape. Among Volume 1's contributors are writer/artist William Stout, who shares the true story of a Yugoslavian citizen's love of Americans; Stan Sakai, vividly recalling his last visit to New York City; and Paul Chadwick, who offers his interpretation of the heroism of the passengers on Flight 93, whose sacrifice kept September 11 from being an even more tragic day. Cartoonists Tony Millionaire, Sam Henderson, Mike Diana, Scott Morse, Mark Crilley, Roger Langridge, Chris Eliopoulos, and Mark Martin are among those offering differing takes on a range of subjects spanning from terrorism and heroism to survival and the challenges of parenting. Other stories include an illustrated essay by Dean Motter; a Walt Whitman-penned meditation on death illustrated by Quique Alcatena; Darko Macan's "An Expert Opinion" on breaking the cycle of violence; and "T.V. Exec Visits Ground Zero" by TV Funhouse creator Robert Smigel and his Ex-Presidents collaborator, artist Michael Kupperman. Playboy Magazine's Istvan Banyai plus Carlos Meglia, Renee French, Alex Maleev, Peter Kuper, Tommy Lee Edwards, and others offer haunting, inspiring illustrations that distill the emotions provoked by the tragic events of September 11.

Grady is skateboarding toward a major decision

No longer able to live with his grandmother, fifteen-year-old Grady Grennan has to find a new address. one option is to move in with his mentally disabled half brother, Louie, in Seattle. But that poses a problem: Louie's adoptive mother, Vickie, and Grady are about as compatible as Mozart and heavy metal.

Nevertheless, Grady's testing the waters. He's in Seattle for a concert tribute to his and Louie's mother, a grunge rock icon who died three years ago. Grady has been invited to speak at the tribute, but what is he supposed to say to thousands of adoring fans about a mother who abandoned her sons in favor of a musical career?

Both humorous and deeply moving, Tribute to Another Dead Rock Star poses challenging, provocative questions to all sorts of readers -- cynics, liberals, slackers, and rock stars included.

Grady Grennan is finding out that it's pretty hard to get over your mother's death when you hear her voice every time you switch on the radio. Besides being Grady's mom, Debbie Grennan was also a famous heavy-metal rock star. Since her drug overdose, Grady has tried to fill the hole she left in his life with everything from skateboarding to spending more time with his mentally disabled brother, Louie. But he can't quite seem to master the skateboard, and his time with Louie is often spoiled by the vicious arguments he has with Louie's stepmother, Vickie. Now the third anniversary of his mother's death is approaching, and Grady has been invited to a tribute concert in her honor. The concert weekend brings Grady's feelings to a head, and he must decide if he's going to be a real brother to Louie (and a part of Vickie's family) or remain just another long-haired slacker--the son of a dead rock star.

Through Grady's conflicted feelings for Louie, author Randy Powell successfully captures the struggle between selfishness and generosity that constantly rages in the teen psyche. "I can't imagine... not seeing Louie for a whole year. On the other hand, I can't imagine living in the same house with the guy, either." Grady's disagreements with Vickie over everything from music to religion crackle with a parent-child tension that teens will immediately find familiar and amusing. With the invention of Grady Grennan, Powell has given young adult literature a thoughtful new underdog--with the smart mouth of Rats Saw God's Steve York and the soul of The Outsiders's Ponyboy Curtis. Meet Biff: weird, wild-haired, recovering pinball addict. He's eighteen but looks more like fourteen, and it drives him crazy. He's never had a girlfriend, can't talk to girls without freezing up, and isn't quite sure about the human race in general. Biff's immediate concern, however, is Tommie, the girl he's had a crush on for the past twenty-three months. Maybe it's about time he got up the nerve to say more to her than "Hi."
Then Biff meets Heidi: beautiful, smart-mouthed, cigarette smoker. She's here visiting her aunt in Seattle because she's been suspended from her high school for who-knows-what reason. Biff has never found himself getting such a kick out of being with someone, even though she often drives him crazy.
This is the romantic, comic story of two quirky, imperfect people who couldn't possibly fit into each other's lives, but do, sort of.

When Milo is in fifth grade, his parents get divorced, and his teacher, Ms. Swinford, helps him make it through the year. He loves hearing her sing “The Happy Wanderer” and reminisce about the year she lived in Switzerland during college, practically on the misty slopes of the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn! During the next five years, Milo moves through the mists of Washington State – from place to place and school to school – while his mother tries to figure out what to do with her life. Along the way, he tries to “seek the truth,” as his free-spirited father urged him to do before he left, but he never forgets Ms. Swinford and her tales of Switzerland. Then, when he gets the chance to see Ms. Swinford again, his understanding of what is true is shaken.

With the authentic teen voice and quirky characters he’s known for, Randy Powell tells a thoughtful story about a loner searching for his own path in a constantly changing world.
