Description

L S Lowry is one of Britain’s best-loved artists. In "LS Lowry: Conversation Pieces", gallery owner Andras Kalman tells of his long friendship with the man and his experiences as a dealer in Lowry’s work. An Hungarian émigré, Kalman opened his first gallery in Manchester in 1949 - an establishment that soon attracted a visit from the great Mancunian artist. Lowry not only bought a work on display but immediately agreed that Kalman become a dealer in his work. The two men became firm friends and their relationship continued until Lowry’s death.

Now in his eighties, Kalman recalls Lowry in conversation with the writer and critic Andrew Lambirth, drawing a vivid picture of the private man. A sensitive, somewhat reclusive character, Lowry showed himself only to a handful of intimates, and Kalman gives a sympathetic account of his client and friend, drawing attention to the seldom-recognised breadth of his work. Illustrated by 80 paintings, Lowry’s best-known works are displayed, along with lesser-known works of equal boldness and originality. A remarkable insight into the life and unique talent of a great British artist.

Description

Twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind this fragile community.

In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price.

Northern Ballet Theatre, Sadler's Wells, LondonAs you'd expect from the choreographer of Cats, this homage to the Salford painter LS Lowry is full of strong shapes and picturesque industrial-town incident, but its episodic structure gives it the slightly uneasy feel of a musical in which the cast Dance dramas from movers and Shakers David Nixon premiere at Northern Ballet

Waiting for Bungalow to get blitzed at Irish Open - Irish Times
Waiting for Bungalow to get blitzed at Irish OpenWith his bulk, Lowry was no matchstick man like those painted by his namesake, LS Lowry. But his strength was a useful foil on this foul day, and his svelte short game, played at a brisk pace, was akin to John Daly in his pomp.
