Edward V: The Prince in the Tower

Description

Memorable not for his life but his death, Edward V is probably better known as one of the Princes in the Tower, the supposed victim of his uncle, Richard III. Though he was never crowned, Edward reigned for 77 days until Richard made himself his nephew’s Lord Protector before imprisoning him and his younger brother Richard in the Tower of London. Michael Hicks presents to us the backdrop to this tragically short life—Edward’s parents, the contemporary political scenery, his own remarkable achievements—and reveals how he was both the hope of a dynasty and an integral cause of that dynasty’s collapse.

Excerpt: ... the hands with liquor, sometimes three or four gallons; and, during my seven years' apprenticeship, I do not know that there was a day when there was not more or less liquor about; but although I used it freely with my shopmatcs, through mercy I was preserved from forming the distressing artificial appetite of the habitual drunkard; for it appears that intemperance was not my besetting sin, and, therefore, I claim but little merit for my temperate habits; though I may say, what too few can say, that I have used no spirituous liquors as a drink in private, in company, or in business for near forty years, and but very seldom as a medicine. But licentious lewdness was much more a besetting sin, and my preservation from ruin in this way appears to me as a miracle, for I certainly indulged in licentious thoughts till their corrupting tendency led to what was still worse, lewd conversation; and had I broken through the barriers of virtue, I have reason to believe, from the strength of my passion and the weakness of my resolution, I should have plunged into that vortex of dissipation that might have'sealed my eternal ruin. But, oh! heavenly Shepherd, who sleepest not by day nor slumbereth by night, it was thy preserving power that saved me from this pit of pollution, to sing thy praises on the banks of deliverance. I am, therefore, not ashamed to meet any woman in this world, or in the world to come. On this subject I would wish to say more, but am at a loss to find language sufficiently chaste and sufficiently forcible adequately to set forth what I feel. Suffice it to say I was introduced by lechers and debauchees into the worst of company and the worst of places, both in city and country. And what added to the danger of my being entirely lost to every tender Christian feeling, I had bec...

Description

America's most recognizable naive artist, Edward Hicks was virtually unknown in his own time. Alice Ford writes with sensitivity and creativity about this self-taught artist, his troubled relationship with his father and other Quaker elders, and his deep love for his children and grandchildren.

Edward Hicks, Painter of the Peaceable Kingdom remains the most complete portrayal of the life of the painter, with invaluable information about dates and attributions for this important American artist. Ford makes extensive use of family correspondence and Hicks's own memoirs, giving readers a deeper understanding of this genius and his unparalleled place in American art and iconography.

Edward Durell Stone: A Son's Untold Story of a Legendary Architect

Rizzoli

List Price: $85.00
Price: $52.92
You Save: $32.08 (38%)

Description

A personal and authoritative biography of one of the most controversial figures of twentieth-century architecture, written by the architect’s son. Architect Edward Durell Stone was both celebrated and scorned, and led a life that was both triumphant and embittered. Among the iconic projects for which Stone is responsible are The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. But a negative reception among the architectural community often accompanied his popular and commercial successes, a double edge that continues to inform his legacy. Author Hicks Stone, Edward Durell Stone’s son, not only addresses a body of work that has been largely neglected if not outright misunderstood but also explores a complex, multidimensional, and often turbulent life.
