DescriptionFrans HalsBORN: c1580 in Antwerp, Belgium. DIED: August 26, 1666 in Haarlem, Netherlands. MOVEMENT: Baroque INTERESTING FACTS: Hals studied under Carel van Mander in Haarlem. His first wife, Annetje Abeel, died in 1615 leaving him with two children. Hals remarried in 1617 and had eight more children with Lysbeth Reyniers. Hals style of painting was similar to Impressionism, with its looseness of color. Later in life, Hals’ commissions were not enough to support him. In 1654, his possessions were sold at auction to pay his debts. In 1662, he was granted public assistance with a yearly pension. NOTABLE WORKS: Banquet of Officers of the Civic Guard of St. George, Malle Babbe, Peeckelhaering, The Laughing Cavalier and Isaac Abrahamsz Massa.
