AWSOME BOOKS
All books by M.D.H are unbelievable. Read Stepping on the Cracks 1st, the this, then As Ever Gordy. Trust me, you wont be able to put the books down!
Following In My Own Footsteps
This book was awesome. It was set in the time of World War two
and the details of this book grabs you into the story, and you dont want to put it down. It gives the mind to think of the other people in the world who do get abused like the family in this book. It also gives a bit of history about the president Roosevelt and how the war began/ended. This book is a must read book to anyone who come across it.
The Best Book I ever read
This book was very great! I loved it! Most of the book was sad, but the ending was enjoyable! Thank you for writing such a wonderful book!
Following My Own Footsteps
Gordy was in 6th gradewhen he moved away from Colledge Hill.He moved because his father went to jail for beating him.so,they moved away from Colledge Hill. They moved to Grandville to live with their Grandma. At Grandma's Gordy learns how to be nice.I liked it,i think you will to. Following My Own Footsteps reminds me of Tallahasee Higgens, another book M.D.Hahns.The likeness is they both move to reletives.I give it 4 stars(on a scale of 1-5)There's alot of cussing.
A Great Book!
If you like to read about how people change from being snotty, to actually helping someone, this is the book for you. There are just so many great things about this book, that it's hard to decide where to start. Gordy has trouble fitting in at his wealthy grandmother's house, until he meets the boy next door. The boy next door has strict limitations, and is in a wheelchair. Gordy thinks that the boy's mother is babying him, and when he tries to do something, he just makes it worse. His VERY abusive father ends up coming back later in the story, so read the book if you want to know more. This is definitly a must read!!!

Description

Look for Me by Moonlight is Mary Downing Hahn’s eerie, suspenseful tale of dangerous love.
In a remote Maine inn, where Cynda is supposed to be reconnecting with her father and his new family, she is also falling in love for the first time. But this isn’t a typical teenage romance. The object of her affection, Vincent Morthanos, is older and worldly, with pale, aristocratic good looks. And he has a secret—a secret that could destroy Cynda’s family, unless she can free herself from love’s deadly embrace.

Customer Reviews

Not what you might expect.
I read this book in a couple of hours. It was so well written I could hardly put it down! I think this is a very believable book - the way the children were enticed and tricked. Of course vampires are not real but it is easy to see how someone as charming as Vincent could charm and manipulate others. I think you could either be surprised or annoyed by the outcome. The characters had depth and seemed real. I think this is more like what Twilight should have been. Well worth reading.
Not Half Bad
I know this book is aimed at readers younger then I (Im almost 24) but I loved the story so much. I will admit I was dissapointed twords the end of the book because it wasnt what I was expecting. I was expecting a run of the mill romance story between a mortal and a vampire but boy was I wrong. I was sad at the end when the vampires true intentions became known to the reader - I was really looking for a happy (fantasy romance) ending but thats not what I got. The book was still worth reading though and I kept my copy to read again in the future. If your looking for a happy ending where the two end up together then dont read this book. If your up for the unhappy ending to the romance but a still happy ending for the girl then pick this one up. I read it in one sitting so it definatly wasnt boring!
Predictable...meh
I've been on a YA fiction kick and especially paranormal with Halloween around the corner along with a few related challenges, so when I saw this at the library it looked really fun and interesting, so seductive. It really wasn't.

Cynda comes to live with her dad, stepmom, and half-brother up in cold Maine and the inn that her father and stepmother own and run. But it's haunted! Maybe I'm too used to vampires trying to be good like Angel from Buffy, Edward from Twilight, and now we have the Vampire Diaries. But when the mysterious stranger shows up, I as the reader, knew he was evil! Why couldn't Cynda? Or the rest of the family? The little boy knew, the cat, and even the next-door neighbor! So I'm reading about all her goo-ga's over Vincent and it's pretty sickening. I knew what was coming and I couldn't stop it. I really wanted to be bamboozled like Cynda and her parents, and be shocked at the end that he was bad to the bone! But it wasn't to be...

It was a really fast read, but predictable and the characters were just a bit too annoying for my taste.
starts off with a strong flame and soon fizzles out
Due to the recent craze with this vampire genre in books and on film, with sexy immortals falling for sweet and nonchalant girls hoping to give them everlasting love and life I was taken aback when reading this book. I forgot that these (heartthrobs) vampires are supposed to be merciless bloodsucking killers! But thanks to Look For Me By The Moonlight I wont ever forget it again!

Cynda is the young, plain, impressionable heroin moving to Maine to live with her estranged father

at his old inn. He left her when she was six to be with his now wife, a former student in his literature class. They have a young annoying son, Todd and one on the way. Immediately Cynda starts feeling alone and unwelcome in her quite frightening old house. She meets a young, artistic loner named Will who seems interested in her. I thought Will was the awaited vampire that would sweep her off her feet. Although she swooned after him for a day or so he was out of her book the moment she met Vincent. He's a charming older and wiser man with good looks and a great personality. She and her parents are taken with this worldly man almost immediately. They're impressed by his intelligence and conversation. But Todd, Will and even the family cat are disturbed by his presence although Cynda doesn't seem to notice or care.

There relationship seems quite strange considering he's likely in his mid-thirties and she's sixteen. He makes secret gestures and passes at her soon inviting her to join him in the woods at night where she loses her head and heart. Making out with him frequently Cynda thinks she's in love and feels no wrong and even I wanted it to work. Inappropriate? Yes, But I figured "there vampires right?" There moral compasses must differ quite a bit from us mere mortals!

Before long Vincents real motives are brought to light when he begins sucking Cynda's blood each

night and draining her of energy in the day time. Slowly he makes her slip into a depression and change into a vampire herself beacause soon she too only craves blood from others. Transformed into this robotic state Vincent uses intimidation to keep her from telling her parents who stupidly think she has a flu.

During the rushed ending to the book Cynda decides at the last minute to get rid of Vincent with the help of Will. What kept this book from being good was the fact that it was beyond realistic. Even though this is a book about vampires and ghosts, etc. I still found it hard to believe that Cynda's parents were so wrapped up in their own lives they hardly noticed a change in their daughter. Even when Cynda cried and pleaded for her father not to leave her side saying "Don't leave me daddy, stay with me, don't let him come back.", her father still suspects nothing of the stranger in their house and leaves Cynda alone in her room acting as if she irritated him. His young wife proves to be no help either and only when Vincent is dead do they act like normal human beings but I guess the authors excuse for this was they were "under a spell". How convenient!

It was an easy an mildly enjoyable read. Some humor and suspense tried to fill in the holes of the plot but it was OK. I applaud the author for reminding me that not all vampires are friendly and want to seduce me.

ridiculous.
I really hate writing negative reviews. REALLY. However, I would hate for anyone who was looking for something other than a sappy, child's story to waste their money on this. I can't believe this book is in the same genre as Twilight, the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, the Blue Blood saga, and so on. The main character, Cynda, a sixteen-year-old girl, far from her mother, was completely unlikeable from the start, always whining and complaining, therefore it was near impossible to feel sorry for her when she became entranced by an evil vampire. She was just simply a
BRAT, as well as "Toddy" her younger brother. Her parents were total idiots, even before Vincent-the vampire staying in their inn, seducing their children-put them under a spell. The only likeable character was the housekeeper's grandson, Will. And I almost didn't like him, simply because he was able to like Cynda and her stupid family. I can't believe I wasted my day reading this.

A Doll In the Garden
Mary Downing Hahn is an excellant writer! All of her stories are a fun, thrilling, mysterious adventure! I would recommend any of books to readers of all ages. She hooks you from page one and doesn't let go until the final word!
..
Ms Hahn simply as a gift for writing chilling and yet so romantic spooky stories. As a child this book entranced me. I checked it out multiple times and would let the detailed and rich story wash over me. A great plot, complex characters, and vivid description make this a fantastic mystery.
favorite childrens book from when i was a child
when i was a kid in middle school this is the one book i couldnt put down and now i have it and will never have to put it down. i am very happy with the purchase because i love this book.
Perfectly haunting
My ten-year-old daughter and I loved this book! The story has so many elements that come together to make it a great read - mystery, conflict, good old-fashioned villain who eventually makes good, friendship, love, grief, and the perfect degree of thrill for the age group it is intended for. Throw in a couple cats and a lovely ending and what more can you ask for. We hated to put this book down.

The book does a particularly admirable job tackling the issues of death and grief, and also makes the reader consider the thought of a spirit world so perhaps this might make younger, more sensitive readers uncomfortable. The writing makes for a descriptive and realistic read despite the ghost story, but there are moments of adult language poking through 10-year-old Ashley's thoughts and I did think the sudden, seemingly complete turnaround of Ms. Cooper was a bit unusual. Nonetheless, the author has created a delightful book that will haunt the mind and heart and leave the reader with warm fuzzies in the end.

Good Plot and Story
I had wished the author had gone further into the ending then she did, but all in all it was a riviting story and kept you turning the page--this would make a great movie if the plot were stretched further to make the ending more complete as far as "closure" goes. It just felt like it left you hanging but all in all a great story for it's age group.

Great book!
I loved this book, though I got it by chance as a gift from my mom's friend. It might be hard to get a hand on, but it's worth it. There's a lot of suspense and I couldn't put it down! I agree with my fellow readers, it's the best book! *Thumbs up*
My Review
In this book Laura and her brother Jason go off to live with their aunt while their mother and father prepare for a divorce. While living with their aunt, Laura meets a strange old woman who claims she is a witch and can get her parents back together. The only catch is that Laura must take an item that belongs to her brother, her mother, her father and her aunt and give it to the witch.
At first Laura doesn't believe in magic, but when her brother gets mysteriously ill, Laura believes that the witch's spell really works. Now Laura has to find a way to break the spell before it's too late.
The Time Of The Witch-5 stars on my rating!

Mary Downing Hahn books
ALL HER BOOKS ARE THE BEST. MY GRANDDAUGHTER WHO IS 10 LOVES THESE BOOKS AND HAS READ ALMOST ALL OF THEM.
Mary Drowning Hahn
This book, Promises to the Dead, is a great book that took place during the Civil War time. It begins when Jesse is hunting turtles for the family's famous soup in the family down in the creek. The next thing he knows is that he's finding himself promising a dying slave women that he'll take her young son, Perry, to a relative in Baltimore. Caring for a slave was against the law and against everthing Jesse was thought. He can't break a promise made to the dead and more importanly, he must follow what in his heart is right. The journey turns out complety different from what Jesse thought. He comes upon many hard decisions and tough choices he must do for what he thinks is right. Does Jesse make it through? Read the book to find out!!
I did like the book because it was suspensful and tought you to do was right from wrong. It really made you think of what is important in life. I would recommend the book if you like to be in suspense and if you like books on Historical Fiction and wars.
review
i thought this book was very interesting it told a lot about how it was when there was slaves.people who like mysteries and thrillers should read this i think mary downing is a great writer and that everyone should read it to find out what it was really like in a persons point of view that was there when there was slaves.
Promises to the dead
(...)I just got done reading the book Promises to the Dead. Promises to the Dead is a mystery book. It's about a boy who has to take a slave woman's child to a relative in Baltimore. When they get there, they find out that the relative wasn't there. So,they go on a journey to find her. Along the way, they get into some trouble. If you like mystery books, you should definitely read this book.
An engaging, different story of a move to freedom.
Jesse's search for turtles in a swamp leads him to newresponsibilities and reluctant encounters with slavery as he makes apromise to a dying slave woman that her young son will be taken to asafe home in Baltimore. Jesse's beliefs conflict with his promise and are complicated by his young charge's stubbornness in this different story of a move to freedom.

Customer Reviews

By itself, this is a good enough book.
Enough chills combined with some simple pragmatism ("People do stupid things all the time", she says to the dead girl!) and remorse to make this a perfectly readable ghost story for older children and younger teens. Except...

Except I kinda grew up on Mary Downing Hahn. I read Wait Til Helen Comes easily a dozen times. A year.

And this book has... actually, all the same elements.

A bratty younger sister with a mysterious friend (who is a ghost, natch.) A vengeful ghost who's really scared, alone, and misunderstood. Real and potential drownings. Various unhappy children, some of whom are dead. Guilt over childish mishaps that shouldn't be your fault except that somebody died. An understanding older sibling who helps the ghost move on and stop being a pain. A rejoining with the (ghostly) family. Generic chills and meanspirited pranks.

I read this book, and every page seemed overlaid with another from the original. This would be bad enough except, of course, that the same author wrote both. It was kinda creepy, and not in the spiders-down-your-back sense that you WANT when you're reading a ghost story at midnight. (Okay, it wasn't midnight, that's lost its appeal now that I'm *allowed* to stay up as late as I like, but you get my drift here.)

Truthfully, I don't know if Wait Til Helen Comes is superior to this one. I re-read it recently and was surprised at how fast it went by! Contrary to all expectation, I think they're actually writing meatier books for the YA and kidlit crowd lately :P

But if you did read Helen, you may want to pass on this one, at least for yourself. Get your nostalgia kick with the original, one-and-only. Otherwise, it's just going to be too weird. (And if you're a kid? I'm inclined to say to go with the original anyway. If you have to pick one, might as well pick up the one you can get at a yard sale for a quarter.)
Adult Eavesdropping
I read out loud to my ten year old daughter every night. We started reading "Deep, Dark and Dangerous." To my surprise, my husband started listening in from his office as I read. He had began to tease us and roll his eyes for the first couple of chapters, but by the time we really got into the story, he was eager for story time and crawled into bed with us each night.

This is a great ghost story for kids. It is scary and suspenseful enough, but did not give my daughter nightmares. The character development is good and the story keeps adults engaged as well. Many nights, I was begged to read more than one chapter for my eager audience.
best book i've ever read
By my 10 year old daughter: i loved this mystery book. It was very good i can't wait to start another book by this author. I hope you have fun reading it too.
R's Goods
I enjoyed this book. It kept me on edge the entire time, and the little girl, oh, what a mystery. It's well written and very deep and involving. I would certainy recommend this book whether you're 13 or 30.
Best Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a really amazing book. It keeps you always wanting to read more. It is a great ghost story and it is very suspenceful. You should read it if you like mystery, and if you like to be freaked out! I would recommend this book to anyone who asks about it. Mary Downing Hahn is a very talented author and her stories are great. If you liked her other books, you should read this one too.
