Suddenly One Summer
The last thing that Jenna Davis is looking for is attention, but when she sees a pregnant teenager try to kill herself by jumping off a pier, she has to help. An action which brings reporter Reid Tanner into her life. Reid can tell that Jenna is hiding something and the reporter in him wants to find out what it is. I can't believe I missed this series when it first debuted last year. I'm loving Angel's Bay!! And Suddenly One Summer is a jam up way to start a new series! I loved Jenna and Reid and found myself absorbed with the people of Angel's Bay. Loaded with secondary characters that you are anxious to see more of in future books, Suddenly One Summer is not to be missed! I'm off to read the second book in this series, On Shadow Beach, right now!

I had never read this author before and now I am trying to find every book I can by her. It is a refreshing change from what I normally read (best-selling murder mysteries).
Romance mystery books
I have stumbled upon Barbara Freethy and I love this book. I normally read Susan Wiggs, Nora Roberts, Mary Alice Monroe, Luanne Rice, Heather Graham, Fern Michaels. I will now add this author to my favorites list.
Its a book
I have no idea what's in this book....I'm guessing its a romance novel. It was requested as a gift for my wife. She reads romance novels. Amazon should vet their requests for people like me to "review" EVERYTHING we buy. Some stuff I buy, I have no idea if its a good buy or not...they are just gifts.
Don't miss this fabulous new book!
If you like your summer reading to be full of unforgettable characters and lots of great emotion you should definitely get hold of SUDDENLY ONE SUMMER, Barbara Freethy's latest book. Actually it's the first in a series that takes place in a California town called Angel's Bay. It's a real page-turner and I can't wait for the next book in the series. On Shadow Beach- A Joyfully Recommended Title
Lauren Jamison left Angel's Bay when she was a teenager. Her younger sister, Abby, was murdered and Lauren's boyfriend, Shane, was accused of the murder. Now Lauren has been forced to return home to care for her father, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, which throws Shane back into her life. As Shane and Lauren find their way back to each other, the true murderer is shaken by Lauren's return. As Lauren and Shane search for the truth and fall in love again, the murderer is just as determined to keep the past hidden, at whatever the cost.

On Shadow Beach is the second book in Barbara Freethy's Angel's Bay series and it just keeps getting better. After reading Suddenly One Summer I was enthralled by Barbara Freethy's Angel's Bay world and can't stop reading! While Lauren and Shane are the central characters of this book, and they definitely captivate the reader, the rest of Angel's Bay make you want MORE. Without a doubt, this is a must be read series!

Barbara Freethy does an amazing job in `On Shadow Beach' putting both elements of long-lost love and mystery together.

This book is the second novel following On Angel's Bay, which also takes place in a small California town where there was a long-unsolved murder of a teenage girl.

But that dead girl was Lauren Jamison's sister. Lauren left Angel's Bay to try to forget about the past, but she is forced to return to take care of her aging father. Being home again, Lauren is forced to remember the past, which includes remembering Shane Murray, the one guy she has not been able to forget. Unfortunately, Shane was accused of killing her sister. Now that Lauren is in town, Shane is finally able to defend himself and tell her about the murder. The twists and turns that lead to the truth around her sister's murder were quite a surprise. One that I did not see coming at all!

Freethy's writing is style is free flowing and her pacing is beautiful. I was able to read this book quickly, and I hope she continues writing more about Angel's Bay. Just a warning to readers, this book is a blend of romance and mystery, so don't expect steamy love scenes. There are love scenes and plenty of romantic tension, but it is definitely more of a blend of mystery mixed with some romance, rather than just romance.

It was a pleasure reading this story. Just the description of the town makes me wonder if there is indeed one like this in California. I would like to visit!

I really love this author - she has created such a wonderful town and characters in this series - I can hardly wait for the next book to come out.
Another Winner
Great addition to this series. I do hope we have another to tell Annie's story
Okay, but looking ahead for better
On Shadow Beach is the second book in a series set in the mythical seashore town of Angel's Bay, CA. Unfortunately, I didn't like it as much as the first installment, Suddenly One Summer. Freethy has set up an interesting situation, wherein a ship wreck in 1850 just outside the bay, left many townspeople who are decendants of the survivors and a group of angels (or ghosts, depending on your beliefs) of those who perished. There is one survivor in particular, a baby named Gabriela, who washed ashore and who bore a distinctive birthmark that her descendants also bear. In the first book, an angel (or ghost) of one of those descentants played a crucial role in the climax of the book. This book, which focuses on the unsolved murder 13 years earlier of a teenager named Abby, doesn't have such a direct heavenly (or psychic) intervention.

Lauren, Abby's older sister has returned to Angel's Bay because her father is suffering from Altzheimer's Disease and neighbors have warned the family that he is no longer safe on his own. Lauren's family had been torn apart 13 years earlier by her sister's murder, with her mother unable to stay in the area and her father unable to leave. Lauren's mother had left taking the remaining two children and her father had remained behind distancing himself from the rest of the family. Lauren's pain is compounded by the fact that her father had always favored Abby and that Lauren's boyfriend, Shane, had been a suspect in Abby's death--with the supposition that he was cheating on Lauren with her sister. Shane had refused to reveal details of that night when he was seen with Abby despite having told Lauren he was working. He wouldn't reveal the truth about his motives and actions that night, putting the 17 year old Lauren in a position where she could not entirely trust in his innocense but also, at the deepest level, couldn't believe he was capable of killing her sister.

Barbara Freethy has created a lot of appealing characters along with her intriguing back story, but for me, the character of Shane and the chemistry between him and Lauren weren't really compelling. The solution to the mystery of who killed Abby was really no surprise, and Freethy's writing of the climactic event when Lauren's life is imperiled by the killer after which she confronts the killer, didn't raise my pulse. Perhaps the intervention of Abby's spirit, which Lauren felt in a non-specific way earlier in the book, would have enlivened things (no pun intended). The character of the person perhaps more responsible than the actual killer for Abby's death, along with the nature of their evil, are also left underdeveloped.

Jenna, the heroine of the first book, Suddenly One Summer, makes token appearances, but the hero is never mentioned, so there's no telling forward of that story. The story of Kara (Shane's sister) and her husband Colin, a cop wounded in the line of duty, does carry forward in a significant way. Colin remains in a coma as Kara has to carry on, pregnant with their first child. Also continued here, but not to be resolved until later, is the story of the Sheriff, Joe Silveira, his semi-estranged wife Rachel, Charlotte, the town's OB/GYN, and her first love, the new minister in town. A sort of love rectangle. While Lauren's father, Ned Jamison, doesn't exhibit the same symptons I saw in my father-in-law, who suffered from Altzheimer's (of course there's a lot of variation between individuals) the depiction of his anguish while struggling to grasp the memories that define his life while knowing they are vanishing, the way he is determined to stay in his familiar environment where he knows he functions better, and the way he is perfectly normal and enjoying life much of the time, but at other times, is lost, is poignant and accurate.

So, I will be reading the next, presumably last, book in this series to see what happens to the characters that I've felt connected to and to see how Freethy brings the story of the lost ship to a conclusion in the present, as she seems to be intending to do. I just feel that the writing in this book wasn't good enough to bring a feeling of urgency and excitement to Lauren and Shane's relationship or to the unraveling of the mystery of Abby's death, or to the life or death peril at the climax of the book. I was left feeling that On Shadow Beach is just another pleasant but average romance novel.

Freethy returns to romance
Briana has waited for five years for her husband to be released from prison, unfortunately, weeks before his release, he is killed by a fellow prisoner and questions are left unanswered. At her in-laws urging, Briana relocates to the small coastal town Derek grew up in to raise her son and prove her husband's innocence. But unexpected sparks start to ignite when she is faced with the man who is staying in the house next door is officer Jason Marlow, who put her husband in prison. As Jason tentatively reaches out to Briana and her son and they contemplate a relationship, Derek's memory and his angry family stand between them. Will Briana be forced to choose between the painful past and a future that she is not sure she's ready to accept?

Freethy returns to her early romance roots with the Angel's Bay series of novels. Though there are two novels in the series prior to this story, you really don't have to read them in order to follow the storyline, as they are stand alone novels, with only a little overlapping. I enjoyed her return to straight romance after the last several suspense novels have been a little inconsistent.
Series continues to disappoint
In Shelter Cove, the third book in the Angel's Bay series, fails to fulfill the promise shown in the premise for the books. By creating Angel's Bay, a fictional town on the California coast founded by the survivors of a nineteenth century shipwreck, Barbara Freethy set up some intriguing possibilities for stories weaving the past and the present with the supernatural. There is little of the supernatural in this book, just the barest suggestion of possible influence from the afterlife by heroine Brianna Kane's husband Derek. Derek died in prison just before finishing his sentence for stealing three famous paintings, The Three Faces of Eve, a crime of which he claimed to be innocent. The prologe, which describes the painter being haunted by his subject Eve (who perished in the shipwreck) because his paintings do not capture her as she truly was, has little to do with the story in the present. Eve's spirit never reappears and the idea that some of the characters are motivated by being descendants of the painter and of another of his lovers is really weak. I think Freethy was trying to make the paintings a symbol of Briana's struggle to discover whether she really knew her husband or had been in love with an illusion--there are also several references to seeing people in mirrors and how that affects perception--but this is truly not the kind of novel that supports weighty themes or symbolism.

The strength of Freethy's novels, I find, are her characters. They are believable and engaging. The romance between Brianna and Jason, Derek's former friend and the cop whose investigation sent him to prison, was enjoyable and had me feeling positive about the book for the first half or so. Also, the story of Kyra and Colin--another police officer, who was shot in the head in the first book of the series only waking from a coma at the end of the second--continues here. They are strong, likable characters. Their previously blissful marriage doesn't take up where it left off, rather Colin is troubled and irritable, leaving Kyra confused. I thought Freethy handled that well, although they do overcome their problems a little too abruptly to be completely believable. Finally, Sheriff Joe Silviera, OB/GYN Charlotte Adams and Pastor Andre Schilling continue their story, which began in the first book. I have to confess that I am interested enough in them and how Freethy plays that plot string out that I will buy the next book even though I've been disappointed in the last two.

The weaknesses of Freethy's novels are, as far as I'm concerned, everything else. The plots are thin. Mysteries aren't solved; the answers are simply revealed. And when it comes to portraying action, she just doesn't grab me. At the end of In Shelter Cove Brianna is, predictably, caught in a life or death situation with Jason rushing against time to save her. I found reading the scene about as exciting and suspenseful as watching paint dry.

Like I say, I'll be reading the next book anyway. I just hope Freethy includes more of the past and an angel or two next time.
exciting romantic suspense
Five years ago, Brianna arrived at Angel's Bay, California to marry Derek Kane. However, not long after they exchanged I do, he was arrested for stealing three paintings from the local museum. He was convicted and sent to prison. Just a few weeks before his release, Derek is dead.

A single mom, Brianna believes she is the only person besides her mother-in-law and the real thief who believes her spouse was innocent. Upon his death, she vowed to uncover the identity of the felon so accompanied by their child Lucas returns to Angel's Bay and not just for her husband's funeral. She blames Lucas' best friend police officer Jason Marlowe for Derek's conviction as his testimony hung her spouse. Thus when she learns he is her neighbor, she is outraged especially when Lucas seems to worship the cop. Worse she is also attracted to him and stunned by clues that make her believe either Derek did the nefarious deed or Jason set him up to take the fall.

The latest Angel's Bay tale (see Suddenly One Summer) is an exciting romantic suspense with angelic support enhancing the plot. The story line is a classic romantic mystery that has readers and the heroine wondering whether Derek or Jason is the culprit. Although the key characters' cause seems forced to fit the effect rather than driving the flow, fans will enjoy accompanying the widow as she seeks the truth In Shelter Cove.

FBI Agent J.T. McIntyre is determined to catch the thief who conned his father and destroyed his family. He wants revenge as much as justice, and he won't let anyone stand in his way-not even beautiful art historian Christina Alberti, whose secrets make him wonder just which side she's on.

Not a good end
Albeit the reading material is quite good the book's end is almost nonsense. I think both ends written in this book could be better. Nonetheless you'll get hooked with the characters performance and that's good while you read a story. Someone wrote that to read this book you have to read first its prequel but I don't think so.
complex story
I think the first book I ever read by Barbara Freethy was Summer Secrets. After that, she became a must-buy author for me. I do have a couple of her backlist in my TBR pile, but haven't bought them all yet.

Played is about a jewel theft. The Benedetti diamonds, including a legendary 97-carat yellow diamond, are set to be auctioned by Barclay's auction house in San Francisco, and the night before the auction, they're displayed at a party--worn by art historian Christina Alberti.

Christina is uneasy--she's responsible for the diamond, but hasn't had a chance to examine it personally, and if anything goes wrong, she'll lose the last of her professional reputation--most of it already lost because of her father, notorious thief Marcus Alberti. And that's before FBI agent J. T. McIntyre warns her that the man he's tracking, Evan Chadwick (who first showed up in Taken), is a master of disguise and intends to steal the diamond.

Unfortunately, Christina can't be sure her father won't also be tempted. She wants to trust him, but can't. And J. T.'s suggestion that Marcus might be working with Evan doesn't help.

Of course, the diamond does go missing, impossibly, and J. T. and Christina end up working together, though at somewhat cross purposes, to find it. They fall in love, complicated by suspicion and Christina's need to clear her father's name. And then things turn deadly.

There are wonderful twists and turns in this story, including sleight-of-hand, myriad culprits and motives, family secrets and curses, and both J. T. and Christina have hard choices to make: J. T. between love and revenge, and Christina between her father and J. T. Whodunit isn't all that easy, either, and Freethy's talent for complex storylines really shows here.
This book was a dud.
I'm sorry, I can't agree with the reviewers that said this was a real page turner. It was a page turner only in the sense that I was reduced to skimming through the last fifty pages so I could be done with this boredom. This is my first Freethy novel and while I'll give her another chance, I wasn't terribly impressed with this one. It started out okay. Sounded like it might be a pretty good read from the synopsis on the back cover. There's Christina, the artsy expert and then there's J.T., the FBI agent. And then there's a missing diamond. But the excitement ended there. J.T. was a bumbling fool who couldn't seem to do anything right. Christina grated on my nerves with all her whining. The dialogue between the two seemed to repeat itself over and over and the plot seemed just a little too shallow. The whole book, really, was just a dud of a read. A little too cheesy for what the back cover promised.
Evan is back... and just as evil as ever
Sociopath-chameleon Evan Chadwick is back taunting JT McIntyre in this sequel to Barbara Freethy's "Taken." This time out he's in San Francisco in search of a mysterious yet valuable yellow diamond necklace, which some believe is cursed. Gemologist Christina Alberti can no longer work in a museum thanks to her father's Robin Hood tendencies which resulted in her getting blackballed; the only place willing to give her a chance is auction house Barclay's, where the necklace will be sold to the highest bidder. Christina's world is turned on its axis when the necklace disappears and all suspicions turn to her. JT is convinced that Evan is behind the theft (as well as the frame up). Upon further investigation, she learns that the priceless necklace once belonged to Catherine de Medici. With JT at her side, the two go on an odyssey that will take them to Catherine's birthplace in order to learn the secrets of the curse, and a history she's not sure she is ready for.

Freethy has penned a breathtaking and action-packed story that will have readers enthralled from the opening pages to the conclusion - I thought it was better than the first. Just when you think you know what'll happen next, Freethy ratchets up the suspense to keep readers guessing. In order to truly appreciate the story, readers should read "Taken" first, as it provides a lot of background on the relationship between JT and Evan, as well as their respective motivations.
Everybody wants the diamond...
Christina Alberti, antique jewelry expert working in an auction house, is plagued by association to her criminal father, a jewel thief. If anything goes wrong with the upcoming auction of a large diamond owned by a famous Italian family, she'll be blamed. She ignores the warning given by FBI agent J.T. McIntyre, who believes the diamond is the target of his nemesis, Evan Chadwick. The diamond is stolen and the search ends in Florence, Italy, where more is discovered about the diamond than Christina could ever guess.

There's plenty of plot to the story and action, but there were also spans of downtime as the romance developed. Though a little bit disjointed in feel and repetitious to a fault, I still enjoyed the book.

I couldn't put it down
I just finished this book today. I actually did an hour on the treadmill while reading it. I love Barbara Freethy. She is my new favorite author. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was surprised again.
5 stars
I love, love, love Barbara Freethy's books. They're so complex, and all those little threads get tied up.

In this one, the heroine sees a photograph of a little girl outside an orphanage in Russia, and the little girl is wearing a swan necklace identical to one she had as a child. So she looks up the photographer to ask him about it, and opens a huge can of worms.

There's spy stuff, intrigue, danger, hidden identities, families torn apart... Just wonderful.
Intriguing story...
Thought the writing was just ok, but the story was very intriguing and kept my interest for the entire book. Will definitely read other books by this author.
Page-turning suspense with twists and turns
Julia DeMarco is grateful to Michael, her fiance, for remaining at her side during her mother's illness and, later, death. So, she finally decides to book a date for the wedding after a year long engagement. While in a museum (the tentative wedding location) waiting to speak with the coordinator, she sees a deceased photographer's display showing a photo of a Russian girl in front of an orphanage bearing a striking resemblance to herself. She can't help but wonder if that is her since she has no memories from her early childhood and the little girl is wearing the same necklace her mother gave her as a child.

Julia begins her search by locating the photographer's son, Alex Manning, to discuss the photograph. Alex too is shocked by the striking resemblance of Julia to the little girl. Alex recalls his father telling him never to speak of the photograph prior to his 'accidental' death twenty-five years earlier. After his father's death, Alex put his "heart on ice" and became a dedicated photographer whose sole mission is to get the shot no one else can. Julia and Alex unite in a fast paced quest to find the truth about the little girl and the mystery behind the circumstances surrounding the photograph.

Michael, jealous of her time with Alex, wants Julia to stop the search and commit to the wedding plans. Julia's sister, Liz, feels it is a betrayal to search for biological parents/family since she has received nothing but love and acceptance her entire life. Julia continues her search regardless and, together with Alex, they unravels a series of lies and half-truths that eventually lead them both to the truth neither of them expected.

With a series of twists and turns, DON'T SAY A WORD tells an excellent tale of suspense with a little romance along the way. The characters all develop throughout the novel. Liz can easily frustrate the reader, but she eventually settles down and stops being a nag. After all, she's in the story so the reader doesn't feel completely horrible about Julia and Michael. Alex and Julia are an excellent match. Julia learns, not only about her past, but about her true feeling for Alex, Michael and her future. The chemistry between Julia and Alex is undeniable and leads the reader to wonder if Julia is the one who can thaw his heart.
A great read
It has been a while since I read this book, about a year. But it still leaves a great impressin in my memory. I could not put it down for this constant need of needing to know what was going to happen next. The characters and the plot were simply amazing. Well worth the read.

This was a good read. Sequel to Silent Run. Both were good books.
Great book
This is new author for me and was really a nice surprise. Love this book!
Excellent writer
I have read all of Barbara Freethy's books and have loved all of them. Silent Run and the Silent Fall were outstanding for suspence and thrills. I twist around every corner. Both books kept my attention and I did not want to put either of them down.

Read Silent Run first and then the follow up is Silent Fall
A good thriller
The second and last book of the series is a good thriller but not as good as "Silent Run". Nevertheless you won't be able to stop reading until you finish the book. It's not that I do or don't believe in psychic powers but when you solve part of the mystery because someone saw something using his/her abilities is a little disappointing because there was no other way to know what she/he dreamed. Taking that apart is a good thriller.
good book
