His marriage was not supported by Maria Bicknell’s family due to the social standing of the Constables. Constable only sold twenty paintings in England during his lifetime, but he sold more than twenty in a few years in France. After the death of Maria, he suffered from melancholy the rest of his life. He and Maria had seven children. Constable was elected to the Royal Academy, where he gave a series of lectures on the history of landscape painting. Notable Works: The Hay Wain, Dedham Vale.
