In 1761, Canova went to live with his grandfather who arranged for him at eleven years old to work at the sculpting studio of Giuseppe Bernardi.
In 1775 at the age of eighteen, he set up his own studio in Venice.
Canova went to Paris in 1802 to sculpt Napoleon and his sister, Pauline Borghese. He became the court sculptor while in Paris.
In 1810, he was made president of the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome.
Canova received the title Marquis of Ischia by the Pope for arranging the return of Italian art treasures from the French invasion of Rome.
