Description

Here is the classic Boynton counting story in a sturdy, board book version.

Perfect for travel time, bedtime, or PARTY TIME!

How dull, to be one hippo all alone... until the one calls two other hippos on the phone. Soon three more hippos are at the door, bringing along another four. Before the night is through, a houseful of hippos (and one beast) has joined the one hippo for a boisterous bash.
All through the hippo night,
Hippos play with great delight.
But at the hippo break of day,
The hippos all must go away.
In clusters of nine, eight, seven, six, and so on, the hippos depart, finally leaving the one hippo "alone once more, [missing] the other forty-four."

The well-loved Sandra Boynton wrote this tribute to silliness in 1977, inspiring generations of the very young to learn to count. Lively, cute new illustrations complement this edition, with big numbers (one through nine, and nine through one) boldly placed on the corner of each page. The sturdy board book will withstand lots of eager counting fingers, and maybe even a berserk hippo or two. Boynton's familiar style can be seen in scads of other delightfully nonsensical titles, including Barnyard Dance! and Moo, Baa, La La La!. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Son Goes Beserk for Hippos Go Beserk
We got this book for my 16 month old son for Christmas and it immediately became one of his (and my) favorite books. Children will learn their numbers as they they count the hippos attending the crazy party and learn to count backwards as the hippos all return home in the morning. Boynton's story is fun to read, even for adults, and the pictures will captivate even the youngest of audiences. You and your child will love reading this delightful story over and over and over and over again!
Wonderful Book
This has been one of my son's favorite book since he was about 7 months old (he's now 12m). He just loves the page where the Hippos have their party and "go berserk." Now he rushes me through the first few pages until he gets to the party page, focus on all the hippos having a party, and then shut the book. He also likes to look at it on his own. The book is small enough and light weight enough for him to sit and "read" it himself. I imagine it will grow with my son as he gets older and he starts to learn counting. For now the cute story and fun pictures capture his attention.
Our absolute favorite book!
I have read this book about....5000 times - and it's still fun! It was the absolute favorite of my three boys who are now young adults. The art is cute, the concepts engaging and the poetry memorable. Our kids just about held their breath when we were about to reach the "All the hippos go berserk!" page! Then we all went crazy and shook the book all over and jumped around. Fun! That was repeated several times a day for lots of years. Made lots of good times and memories!
Loved by all generations
We had this book for our kids and it was read until it fell apart. Dad particularly liked to do his berserk voice when ALL THE HIPPOS GO BERSERK!

I'm buying it now for my grandson's first Christmas.
great book
this is a really cute book and I like the hard cardboard book. So that the little one and turn the pages to.

A good start
I thought the layout and progression of this book was well done. The characters constantly repeated themselves and that was an insult to my intelligence. As if the Author thought the reader couldn't remember what was on the page before. Also, during the last chapter, the Author included many prayers as if the book was actually a book to convert others into the Authors own religion. Over all, I thought the book was OK. I'd recommend it as a study in what not to do.
No wonder it was free!
The writing is very sophomoric--it makes me wonder how it ever got published. I found the first chapter somewhat interesting, but it went downhill from there. It seemed to me that each chapter was worse than the one before it and I didn't even care enough about the story to finish the book. I felt like I was reading a kid's writing assignment. Like others, I didn't care for the religion that just seemed to be thrown in at odd times. I wouldn't read anything else by this writer. As a side note, I did find it funny that when I tried out the text to speech on my Kindle for a couple of chapters, when it got to the name Cal, if it was at the end of a sentence, it would call him California. I guess it's set up to read it as an abbreviation. That was the most enjoyment I got out of this book.
Hide in Plain Sight
I tried this book because it was a free book for my Kindle for PC and found I liked this book. Short (read it in a few hours), easy to read, and enjoyable. The story is set in Amish country with nice likeable characters. Surprise ending. (I can never figure out who is going to the bad guy!) I like romance and mystery and this was both.
Definitely a good deal
I liked this book for what it was. It seemed a strong beginning for the series. Though, I have to say, I spent a few dollars and grabbed Maia Underwood's new book Surviving Passion and like that one even more. I guess a pure adventure romance is more my cup of tea than mystery romance. It was more breathtaking... in a few ways. ;)
Good Read
Enjoyed the book. Fell in love with the characters and it was a very good story. Can't wait for the next book ! Now looking for other books by this author.

The Best Cookie Book Ever!
[[ASIN:0764566377 Betty Crocker's Cooky Book]

This is the best cookie book--ever. Nothing like those processed phoney cookie mixes that all taste
the same. My kids & i had so much fun making cookies from this book in the '60's & i wanted to
hand down the tradition to my granddaughter. i was
thrilled to find it on Amazon.com. We had a blast
making cookies--the hardest part was choosing which
ones to make the first!
It was great when I was 8-it's still great 30 years later
I loved this cookbook as a child. Loved looking at all the cookies and helping choose the ones to make for special occasions. Now, as an adult, I find that this old cookbook is in some ways better than newer ones. For traditional, seasonal and old-world inspired cookies and bars, this is a great book to have. Simple to make recipes and comfortingly consistent results, using simple ingredients that never go out of style. Lacking the on-trend low-fat substitutions and fusion creativity of newer recipes, it is classy and transporting to make these classics.

Outstanding book for young and aspiring bakers of all ages and skill levels.
Betty Crocker Cooky Book
I own an original copy of this book. When my daughter found it on your website I ordered one for each of my three daughters for Christmas. They were thrilled. The recipes are a lot of old favorites, easy and fun to make. My children and now my granddaughters have fun making and decorating cut-out Christmas cookies.
Finally I have my own copy!
I love this cook book. We grew up with all these cookies. My mom has an original Betty Crocker Cooky Book that she still uses. She copied a few of my childhood favorites for me but it's not the same as having your own copy. This has so many great recipes. They are not lowfat or healthy so if that is what you are looking for, keep looking. A few of the recipies call for shorting which I never use, but most seem to be butter recipes. This is a great book for those of us who are nostalgic about Mom's cookies.
Best Cookie Cookbook
Unlike many of the reviewers, I did not grow up with this book, although I did grow up in the 60's. My Mother was a fan of the Red Plaid Better Homes and Gardens Cookbooks. There are some good recipes there, but seriously, the woman did not know what she was missing! I bought this book because I have an interest in old cookbooks, but I was delighted to discover that the recipes were nothing short of fantastic. The snickerdoodles recipe alone is worth the price of the book -- sheer perfection. I've tried quite a few of the recipes, and I've had no failures. None. Even the pumpkin cookies were devoured by my daughter's fellow elementary students. When you add great recipes to pure nostalgia you have a perfect winner. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to bake and eat cookies. Yum!

Description

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Great Book
-The Book Thief_ is my new favorite book to recommend, the best book I've read since Patchett's _Run_. I loved the two books-within-a-book, complete with illustrations. I also loved the way the narrator interrupts the narrative to comment and to foreshadow; thus we are prepared for many sad happenings and left with an overall positive view of the world, even in its most horrific times. Kindness conquers.

The choice of narrator is a brilliant surprise, which expands as the book goes along. This author seems to be known as a write of fiction for young adults, but this book should move him into mainstream literature.
The Book Thief
This is a very moving book. The author is quite poetic, many beautiful phrases.
An interesting concept in that the book is written by "death". But that is not a depressing concept in the way that it is presented.
Great Bookclub Book
I read this as a bookclub pick and while the beginning feels a little slow it is well worth finishing. To quote a friend "It makes you feel".

Kindle version - no editing/formating issues
A thief that gives a lot to the reader
This book worked for me on several levels: simple yet captivating prose, memorable characters and scenes, a story that is at once grim, hopeful and oddly whimsical, and a truly unique narrator (Death). It conveys not only the well-known horrors of Nazi Germany but also the many levels of victimhood that dominate all parts of a society at war. The Book Thief should appeal to thoughtful teens as well as adults.
This is NOT "Young Adult" fiction -- it is great fiction for any age.
Oddly, I make my living teaching reading, but ended up listening on audio to what has turned out to be one of my favorite "reads" in the past few years. Narrated by Allan Corduner, who gives "Death", our narrator, the perfect voice -- this book was so compelling I had a hard time turning off my iPod at the end of my commute!

I am not going to rehash the plot as that has been done hundreds of times here. Suffice to say this is a brilliantly told story about finding joy in the smallest things in life -- be they a miniature snow man or a stolen book about grave digging. Add the very somber backdrop of Germany during the worst of WW II, and these small pleasures take on a deep resonance.

There are many themes running through this book but one of the most important ones is that you cannot make instant judgments about people. It may be something as huge as not assuming everyone in Nazi Germany was evil or as simple as realizing the foster mother who swears at you non stop is really a very loving caretaker underneath her bluster. In fact, "Death" may not even be what you think he/she is.

The Book Thief is also a very good "coming of age" story -- which is probably why it was branded "Young Adult" in genre. But fumbling through adolescence while Nazis and Allied bombs are threatening your existence is not your average Judy Blume book.

This book belongs in any high school library, but it also belongs on many adults nightstands.

My son loves these books!!!
My son reallly loved the entire series of books... much better to see him up late reading than on the computer or X box!!!

Need Tea Reviews
If I thought the last book was packed with action, then this one has double that! It's non-stop wham wham wham one after another and I just ripped through this book in almost one sitting.

Ah, I loved this book. There were twists and turns I didn't expect, although I suppose they were very easy to spot early on but I suck at that sort of thing. The old Greek tales surrounding Daedalus were artfully crafted in the plot and were given a fresh perspective by the man in question himself. The tale of the labyrinth was also worked in as well.

In this book we get to see the conflict between Percy and Nico as he tries to get him to stand on their side, and his growing feelings for Annabeth. Don't get me wrong, it's very subtle, so you can rest assured that it won't overshadow the main plot. We also get to see him deal with jealousy, doubt, and of course, his own self-sacrificing flaw for others.

The book gets a tad darker as it deals with death, but if there was one neat quirk, it has very faint, faint trace of steampunk in it. Although I'm not sure if you'd even consider it steampunk.

Great story!
Loving Percy Once Again
I had already loved the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and this forth installment just makes make love it even more!

It is once again filled with Riordan's fabulous writing. It amazes me in every book in this series how well he captures the voice of a young teen boy. Percy is such a lovable character. His sense of humor always gets me on his side everytime. In this installment we see our favorite heroes going on a quest inside the labyrinth, an underground maze that is never as it seems. The quest is lead by Annabeth this time. Annabeth had some hard decisions to make. She really had to grow up alot in this book, all the characters did really. Grover continues on his quest for the lost god Pan. I really enjoyed having Tyson back. Him and Percy are great together. I was pleasantly surprised to see Rachel back. I love how Riordan ties each story together and how each character he adds has a purpose. I have to say my favorite part of this one was watching Nico's character development. I am such a sucker for the angsty characters.

I thought the Titan's Curse was action packed, but this one far out did it. Every chapter held an exciting scene that made it impossible to not jump into the next one. We meet some new gods and some new seriously freaky monsters on this journey. I have to admit that I teared up at a few parts, especially in the ending. Alot of the suspense is over at the end, but you are still left with some cliffhangers. Some of the outcomes were easy for me to decipher, but some of them seriously shocked me. I almost don't want to read the next book in the series because it is the last. I just don't want to let these characters go yet! I want to say so much more, but I would just be giving away spoilers if I did. Percy Jackson and the Olympians continues to be one of my favorite series. If you haven't started this series yet, do so ASAP!

A-maze-ing book
At Camp Half-Blood, Quintus has substituted for Mr. D. Percy and Annabeth team up in a new game. They find an entrance to the Labyrinth, and they start a quest along with Grover and Tyson. They make it to Triple G ranch and see Nico. Percy defeats Geryon and continues the quest, but Nico wants his sister back to life. Soon, they split up, but Percy almost gets himself killed. He meets Calypso, but can't stay with her. Percy gets Rachel to lead them since she can see through the mist. They meet up with Nico again, and find Luke's body for Kronos to reform. They return to camp for battle with Grover and Tyson after they find Pan. Grover causes a Panic to stop the whole thing and continues the quest in the next book.

I liked this book because it had some funny parts. Percy's adventures continue in The Last Olympian.

best book ever
The battle of the labyrinth
Two demigod friends Percy and Annabeth, one satyr Grover, and one Cyclopes Tyson set out for a dangerous quest to the labyrinth. Once in the maze they will have to face difficult challenges from fighting monsters to being on a game show hosted by a monster.

I think it had a great story line and a lot of action and humor. I liked the main battle scene at the end. I think he did a good job following Greek mythology like using the real Greek monsters like the Minotaur.

Customer Reviews

Not bad
I will admit that the main reason I bothered with this book was because it was free. I was not familiar with the author but I do like a good mystery/fantasy book. At first I wasn't sure if I liked the writing. Some of the concepts were not clear and I wasn't connecting with the characters. However, the more I read the more I started enjoying the storyline and quirky characters, especially Jenks. Sometimes the descriptive writing was spot on such as Harrison's description of the mink and her movements and actions. Other times it was totally boring.....how many times must she describe Ivy's eyes and Rachel's hissing of her breath? Overall, I liked it and would probably read Harrison's other Hollows books.
Not good enough
The book is funny and in a way entertaining but I would rather read someone who has a different take on vampires like J R Ward or even Lynsay Sands, I am really tired of the same Undead, cannot be in the sun and will burn or be in great pain if it touches a cross ... I appreciate that it was a freebie and will not get the rest of the series unless I can get at the library for free and again maybe not .. dissapointed.
love this series
I got hooked from the beginning. This series is an action packed romance with a fabulous butt kicking witch. What else could you ask for?
Not great, but still entertaining
I got this book because it was free on kindle and had decent reviews. I read the 3* reviews and the 5* reviews and as a whole I think the 3* reviews capture the problems extremely well. The 5* reviews that start off with "kim harrison's debut novel" have to be faked or paid for or something. You can tell the reviews that are written by people just interested in the book and the ones that are trying to sell the book. Im starting to see this more and more with amazon books so Im starting to distrust book reviews. I tend to read the 3-4* reviews because they will give you a much more accurate picture.

Overall I think the book had a lot of issues and was generally not that good of a read. That being said the world is pretty interesting and I did end up getting the second book because it was entertaining enough. I though jim butchers first dresden files book was terrible, but by the third book he hit his stride and produced a TGIFridays quality series. Not great literature, but consistent and entertaining. Im hoping the same happens with this series.

Overall I liked the world and some of the supporting characters. I really dislike the main character - maybe if we knew she was manic depressive and a little dumb I might feel like it made more sense.

Read the 3* reviews to get a very accurate picture of the issues. Here are some of mine in brief.

spoilers below

Annoying and not so good
1) Tomato virus wiping out the population is implausible but I can suspend disbelief here
2) bad guy doesnt make any sense and does the typical stupid things including not just shooting her in the head
3) bad guy is actually saving lives, cant understand why the main character hates him
4) main character isnt likable, weak in many annoying ways and very judgmental and overeactive at odd times
5) bad guys kill other bad guy when trying to kill main character, main character gets all upset saying "you made me kill bad guy" taking ownership over something that clearly isnt her fault. Dumb.
6) The other characters are reasonably likable, if a little wooden. The main character is distinctly not likable.

Interesting twists
1) the virus kills only non magical people so the magical beings now are much more visible
2) The world is overall interesting in the layout of the various groups, magic, powers etc.
Fun read, good character development
I needed something new to read and decided to give this one a try. I am a big fan of Patricia Briggs and Karen Marie Moning, so books with an "unnatural twist" appeal to me. I really liked this book. The pace is fast, the storyline isn't old & re-tread, and the author doesn't tie everything up nice and neat at the end with a big pink ribbon like some books. I look forward to reading more of this series same.
